Q&A

Session with project founder Scott Moreau:

Q: What is Northfield?

A: It is a project that provides a place for people to learn and create.

Q: Why the name Northfield?

A: Northfield was chosen because it was the resulting product of a Wayland fork. Wayland is a city in Massachusetts. Wayland is also the name of a protocol and a C implementation thereof. Northfield’s main protocol component isn’t too far off from the original Wayland protocol and it mimics Wayland in almost every single other way. It is fitting that a city not far from Wayland, was chosen for this purpose.

Q: What is Norwood?

A: Norwood is the Northfield project compositor.

Q: Why are there separate Contribute and Donate links?

A: The Contribute link is for contributing to the project and the Donate link is for monetary donations.

Q: Is it true that you were ‘slashdotted’ for these works?

A: Yep. http://linux.slashdot.org/story/13/03/29/1929253/waylandweston-gets-forked-as-northfieldnorwood

Q: Why did you change your IRC nick to tabeaux after using soreau for so many years?

A: It’s a pun combination of geaux and auto-tab-completion. The slogan for Louisiana State University football team is “Geaux Tigers!!!”. On IRC, it’s a playful reminder to use auto-tab-complete. It can be pronounced taboo for ease of wonder or something.
